Nice, but not for everyone February 12, 2008 P.M.A (Michigan) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you like Jazz, improv and musical experimentation then this is a nice little gem. If you like your music with a couple of cords played in 4/4 time, look elsewhere.

I was moved to write this, after reading the damning " I'm not even sure this can be classified as music" review. I enjoyed this piece and also wanted to give a respectful balance to a group of musicians who have been so kind as to offer their work to us as a free download.
I have listened to this track several times and I find it to be energizing and uplifting. In the spirit of full disclosure, I will add that my partner found parts of it "pretentious". This is most definitely music - but not for every taste.
The track is an improvised freeform-like jazz piece which starts off with a groove laid down by an African style drum and is joined by what sounds like a baritone sax and thence a violin and a chant "If you believe ... etc." The piece goes through various inversions and diversions bringing each instrument to the fore, alternatively raucous (violin), pulsating (sax) and primal (drums).
From a brief web search I found out that Tri-Factor are saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett (ex of the World Saxophone Quartet), violinist Billy Bang and Kahil El' Zabar on drums and percussion (both of The Ritual Trio).
Dark Silhouette sounded as though it would be a great live piece and a couple of reviews that I found on the web indicated that it was something of a highlight of their concerts. A review of a concert that they gave in Warsaw in January of 2003 stated "At times, the music played by Tri-Factor turns into a cacophony, only to return to peaceful melody a moment later. The musicians improvise and only from time to time refer to the fixed outline of the composition."
Open your mind and, "if you believe", you too will turn on to this groove.

I keep an open mind to all musical styles, however I'm not even sure this can be classified as music.
