5 out of 5 stars Great compilation album   October 15, 2008

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Very hard... and a great introduction of a couple artists I had not heard before.

1 out of 5 stars You can't beat free music - but this is just way too heavy for my tastes   August 24, 2008

Having verified the fact that my ears are not actually bleeding after listening to this music, I'm ready to try reviewing The Best of Nuclear Blast. I'm willing to give just about any kind of music (short of Barry Manilow) a shot - especially when it comes in the form of a free album-length sampler download, and I have actually wandered a little ways into the realm of heavy metal once or twice in my life, so I thought I might find something I liked among these tracks. In all honesty, this just didn't happen, though. Apparently, anything heavier than Iron Maiden just doesn't work for me. None of this music spoke to me at all - and even if it had, I'm quite sure I would not have been able to understand what it was saying. As I listened, all that went through my mind was a question - will these lead singers even be able to talk in a few years? Seriously, all this harsh guttural screaming can't possibly be good for your vocal cords. I have no idea what the lyrics of these songs could possibly be because I couldn't understand a word I heard.

The whole free download thing is great, obviously, but since this release may not be free forever, I have to base my rating on the actual music. Unless you're seriously into no-holds-barred head-banging heavy metal or want to seriously piss off your parents, I just don't think even the best of Nuclear Blast is going to appeal to you. I couldn't even tell the different bands apart - that's how bad this music was to my ears.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not great   August 24, 2008

This album is pretty heavy, and it has that garage-band sound that I love. The music really is top-notch and heavy, with a lot of taste. The only problem is these poser vocalists who try to sing and growl and make their voice sound scary. It just sounds fake. Especially on the songs chosen for this album, which is a shame because as a free album it may be many people's introduction to the genre.

Note: you need to download a `downloader' for your distro to download the whole album and get that last song. The one marked Ubuntu 7.10 installs fine in Ubuntu 8.10

This was definately hard rock/metal. Songs were good quality, just a little to heavy for my taste. I am sure any metal fan will like it, especially when free!

I am 50 years old and have been listening to rock music since Dylan went electric. I can honestly say that this is some of the most godawful stuff I've ever heard. BUT, it is free, and thank you to the record company for releasing it this way. I disliked every minute of it, but I am extremely happy to have had the opportunity to hear it, which I wouldn't have otherwise. Hooray, and pass the Tylenol! Hey, BTW, these bands can really play -- I am a drummer and would need oxygen after about 40 seconds of playing at this speed ...
