Solid, but a little dull November 7, 2008 Graham Christian Skaggs I am not really a huge Demon Hunter fan, I liked a couple tracks off of Triptych (sp?), but they weren't that impressionable. I loved Summer of Darkness, but never owned the CD. Honestly, this CD is very solid, I can't deny that, it just does not have a lasting effect, and I don't think it will be remembered. I was hoping for something monumental from Demon Hunter from a musical perspective and they didn't do it. Some reviewers rave about them being experimental in a few areas, but I think they are exaggerating this a little bit. All of the "experimental" elements in this CD are not that impressive or groundbreaking, while they give another dimension to the album, they are not original or even originally used. I am not impressed with their vocalist, I mean he's brutal, but so is just about every other vocalist for a decent metal band. He has gotten a little lower and a little higher, I do not consider this amazing, and I do not speak ignorantly. I am a vocalist, I scream and sing, and I can accomplish more on a technical level the screamer for Demon Hunter. I'm not a tenor like their lead guitarist, and I'll admit I really like his vocals, but generally I think most metalheads can agree that Ryan is not the most talented screamer, and his improvements are slow especially compared to the improvement of other screamers and singers from album to album. So to sum things up, the record is good, if you are into this kind of music, go for it, it just isn't amazing, lasting, or groundbreaking.
Not my favorite DH album but... November 3, 2008 Josh (Fresno,CA) Though the first two DH albums will always be my favorite, Storm the Gates of Hell offers plenty of heavy songs much like the Tryptich. While both albums are solid metal albums, they sound much like most metal bands out today. Demon Hunter's self titled album and Summer of Darkness just sounded a little different from anyone else. I do however appreciate the straight forward nature of some of their lyrics. There is a decent balance between heaviness and melody that has become a staple of DH's sound over the years. A side note for those who think this band is Wiccan, they are not. These guys are very much a Christian band. Ryan and Don Clark were in Training for Utopia, another Christian band, years before Demon Hunter. Ryan has done numerous interviews discussing his faith in Christ, a belief Wiccans do not share.
Pretty darn good August 7, 2008 P. B. Savino (San Bernardino, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been a fan of DH since their very first release and they have yet to dissapoint. I gave them 4 stars on this album, but, that being said, it is also their least impressive in my opinion. When I became a fan of Demon Hunter I was immediately taken away by what I can only describe as a raw, harsh quality that induced immediate head banging no matter what mood I was in. Their albums have become progressively more polished and computer enhanced to a point in which even a song as incredibly brutal as "Storm the gates of Hell" does not match the intensity I felt the first time I listened to "Screams of the Undead" or even "Beheaded." Even though I feel this way it must be said that I still love listening to this album and their concerts are just as amazing as ever. Long live DH.
By Far the Best Demon Hunter Album to Date! July 28, 2008 Lyndall S. Smith (Carlsbad, NM USA) I am not exactly a fan of Demon Hunter. I saw their previous three CDs in a Christian book store when I was in Lubbock, TX. I had recently gone to see the Ozzfest and was in the mood for some Christian Metal. I came across Demon Hunter. I came home and ordered all three albums from Amazon.com and began to listen. The three albums were extremely "death metal" style similar to Sepultra or Slayer. I did not enjoy them very much. A year later, I was in the local record store and saw this album: Storm the Gates of Hell. I figured I had all their other albums I might as well get it. I am extremely glad I did! Although they still have the same type of style they had before they had a few songs that were a little softer. On those songs, specifically: Carry Me Down and Thorns you could understand the message that the band was trying to get across. Even in the other songs you could understand more of what they were saying. This album is sort of in the style of Killswitch Engage. This album in my opinion is there best album to date! I love it!
DH has never been better! May 24, 2008 Jason Frazier (Greenville, TX USA) Yet another phenomenal album by DH. I've been a fan of theirs since the beginning and they continue to blow me away with the highly developed sound & vocals. Yes, Ryan Clark can sing! If you don't have this, get it. If you have it, listen to it. If you listen to it, love it!
